title research (horror) The Thing (1982)

Hello my name is pascal bazile and I am here to talk about the thing a movie that I found on art of the tittle.com the article on the website is quite barebones but in the end it works with the requirements that I need to fulfil

1.       What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

It gives credit to the person who wanted to make the film after focusing on earth after the space ship was falling enjoyable because it actually gives the creator credit when it should at the start and leaves it for a good while unlike how many movies just let the creators name be seen for only a second. Then after that it builds up and materializes the title of the film being the thing in a great way showing how extraterrestrial the movie is because of how bright the words are shown. There is also the fact that the title is not shown like its being written but more like its an opening from some object or in the case of the movie a person being ripped open because of how the letters edges are not all clean. I might find the title sequence barebones, but this is done in a way that I believe looks fantastic it looks visually great and is perfect for this movie giving this movie the best opening for it even if I don’t enjoy it.

2.       What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

It starts by focusing on the catalyst for all the movie’s events being the spaceship and we watch it hurdling down as the camera tilts right to show the image of earth its unfortunate target. After that it shows the creators name while also them showing the image of the title being the thing in a very bright fashion emphasizing how grand it is emphasized by the back background behind the title. In the end it is simple and it works showing the extraterrestrial theme very well as well as using the fact that the thing is an alien to make the actual title light up helps in making it seem alien or extraterrestrial or angelic if you think about it.

3.       What connotations do these images carry?

The spaceship caries the connotations that the film is going to be a bit is fi and would have some sort of relation with aliens as well as space both being correct in the context of the movie. We wee it going into the earth with it bring in the condition that something might might happen because of how people see aliens as bad thing that are nonpeaceful and violent. Then we see the thing sequence with all the light with all the light being shown it can give the connotation that it is very alien very different strange and impactful with it being with a black background most dependently gives it a lot of horror appeal.

4.       How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The music does well to make the entire thing seam strange with its scorching fire like sound it is done very well and is very strange and intense with it being tied with the title card. We get a mysterious tense felling when we see the film opening with the spaceship falling onto the planet its quiet with only the sound of burning happening with the mystery being created being a good thing for the horror genre. Its light seam barebones but the rest of the movie ties so hard into the opening with the title sequence showing everything that caused and showing how impactful it is thanks to the movies use of sound and the light that goes out from the title sequence. I personally do not like it as much as some others do because of how barebones it is but in the end the movie sequence is still a classic that is imitated by many different forms of media.

5.       What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The use of an extraterrestrial presence is a good beginning because of how at the time space was scary because of how unpredictable and naturally scary the entire concept of space was and still is. They smartly use the spaceship by making it shot near the screen and then near earth giving the audience the knowing felling that something bad is going to happen that works very well.

6.       How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

It was used well enough they did well to cut it in a way that was good enough to make it go obediently to look at earth this might seam small but the fast switch works. The reason as to why it works so well is that because it fills in info that one this is bad because of how the spaceship moves in a way where we see it falling into earth as well as the should design making it seam alien yet kind of scary from my view at least. Then the fade to black then there is the way that the title comes out the sound design combined with the jigsaw type way that the pieces of the title move around and come together it worked well.
